Squeak Etoys was inspired by LOGO, PARC-Smalltalk, Hypercard, and starLOGO. It is a media-rich authoring environment with a simple, powerful scripted object model for many kinds of objects created by end-users that runs on many platforms. It has been used to simulate science projects as well as to tell interactive stories. From simple animated sketches to advanced presentations or interactive games, Etoys is a versatile tool for children of all ages. And aren't we all children?
Originally developed by Alan Kay's research group, Etoys now is a free software project governed by the Squeakland Foundation. It is used in schools world-wide on many platforms. Projects created with the Sugar version of Etoys are compatible with the Linux, Macintosh, and Windows versions available for download at squeakland.org.
Underlying Etoys is Squeak Smalltalk, a full-fledged professional development environment. If there is something you cannot accomplish with Etoys scripting alone, it lets you escape to this programming language. The full Squeak IDE comes with Etoys (although it is hidden by default).
Etoys is part of the Sugar Platform, so there is usually no need to download and install this activity separately. Also, the activity is only a wrapper, it depends on the pre-installed "etoys" package (also part of the Sugar platform). Updating the activity only will usually not get you the latest version, you would have to update the "etoys" package, too.

Some years ago I was looking for a tool to write a simple game/story with my kids. Etoys was the only tool which existed then, and still the best tool to explore when it comes to math, physics or media quests.

Having spent all of 2008 teaching Etoys using XOs for Waveplace, I can say with confidence that Etoys is the real deal. To see more, which our hour-long Waveplace Awards or read our field notes and many articles in our newsletter archive.

Etoys is a lot of fun to play and build with. It takes a bit of effort to learn the interface, but even that process can be fun with the built-in tutorials and demos.
Don't be intimidated... try it and you'll often be impressed by the capabilities of this fantastic tool.
