My inspiration for "Across & Down" comes from Scrabble. Players have to make interlocking English words. The board has "ghost" letters on it. For example if you place a "z" on a "z", you score 8 points.

The game has a dictionary of 54,930 English words.
Since the letters are dealt randomly, 100% may not be possible on all layouts. However, I've carefully controlled the deal so as to lessen the chance of this happening.
The letters are divided into four groups for scoring purposes:
1 green: a, e, i, l, n, o, r, s, t, u
2 yellow: b, c, d, g, m, p
4 orange: f, h, k, v, w, y
8 red: j, q, x, z
