More about this activity

Typing Turtle features a sequence of lessons designed to gradually introduce students to touch typing, teaching them a few keys at a time until they have mastered the entire keyboard.

Fun graphics, sounds and characters make for an entertaining experience. An on-screen keyboard with overlaid hand positions shows the correct way to press each key, encouraging good typing habits.

If Typing Turtle does not already contain lessons in your native language, a lesson builder script is included in the activity bundle, which creates keyboarding lessons from a dictionary file.

Having tried several typing tutorials including Mavis Beacon, Mario, and even paper based practice tutorials, this program is by far the best and most flexible. You can create your own lessons and save them as individual files.

I haven`t tested the game part but just the lesson part is exceptional programming. It uses fluency to time how many letters they typed and the accuracy. This is important. To gain speed, you must first be accurate, then you gain speed by keeping the accuracy over a period of time.

This program could be expanded to upload reports to the teacher (I think?), keep a file on a student`s progress, and require a student to repeat a lesson if they did not score high enough.
